The home that cares for you: 5 biophilic elements to reconnect with nature

Have you ever wondered why sometimes you feel anxiety without reason? Or why there are places that calm you just by entering?

The answer may lie in something deeper than what we see: our connection with nature.

As neurodivergent individuals, our senses are more alert. We need spaces that not only look good but also feel good. Environments that help us regulate, breathe, and come home to ourselves as well.

Biophilic design is not a trend. It is a way to return to the essential.

Here I share five elements that will transform your home into a sensory and mindful refuge, where nature dwells with you.

1. Natural Light: The Vital Rhythm that Regulates Your Energy

Sunlight not only illuminates: it regulates our internal rhythms, improves mood, and connects us with the passage of time.

For many neurodivergent individuals, intense or poorly distributed artificial light can be a constant source of overwhelm.

How to let in the light that nourishes you:

- Use linen or cotton curtains that allow clarity without glare.

- Place mirrors to distribute light in dark areas.

- Prioritize that the areas where you spend the most time (work, rest, dining) receive direct light.

- Opt for light colors to maximize natural light, but be careful, I NEVER recommend using pure or nuclear white. You will have the opposite effect of what you seek. Instead of peace and relaxation, you will have pure nerves.

2. Water Elements: Fluidity for your nervous system

The sound of water. Its gentle movement. Its subtle presence.

The water calms. Regulates. Brings humidity to the air and serenity to the mind.

For a neurodivergent mind, an ornamental feng shui fountain in the dining room or living room can be a daily regulation tool. Just be sure to regulate the intensity well or you won't stop going to the bathroom!

How to bring water into your home:

- Place a small fountain in the living room or at the entrance.

- Use sounds of streams, rain, or ocean in the background.

- Add pictures of aquatic landscapes or fabrics in blue tones.

🪵 3. Natural Materials: Textures that soothe the senses

The skin feels it. The eyes appreciate it. The mind recognizes it.

Wood, linen, stone… bring us back to a state of primitive and pleasant connection.

For a mind with high sensory sensitivity, these textures are bridges to calm.

Simple ways to incorporate them:

- Use jute rugs, wicker baskets, cotton cushions.

- Choose untreated wood furniture or those with eco-friendly oils.

- Opt for lime or artisanal ceramic paints like those from Barro Barcelona, which you can find in the decoration specialty of the CONSCIOUS HABITAT category.

4. Natural Aromatherapy: Scents that balance your emotions

The sense of smell connects with your limbic system: the part of the brain that manages emotion.

A single scent can give you clarity, peace, or energy. For neurodivergent individuals, it is a key channel for self-regulation.

Simple rituals with scent:

- Diffuse essential oils of lavender (relaxation), mint (focus), orange (mood).

- Integrate aromatic plants like rosemary, basil, or eucalyptus.

- Air out spaces well: clean air also smells good at home.

- Get rid of all chemical-smelling elements, like plug-in diffusers. They are toxic… they smell good, but they harm you.

5. Sounds of Nature: The audio that embraces you

I have mentioned it before: sound matters.

And when it is natural, it has the power to calm us without asking for permission. It surrounds us, it embraces us.

Ways to create a biophilic soundscape:

- Play ambient sounds: rain, wind, birds.

- Open the windows when you can.

- Use materials like clay, wood, or thick curtains to absorb artificial noise.

To conclude: Your home as medicine

You don’t have to change your entire home to feel the impact.

Start with a corner, a plant, a ray of sunlight that you let in.

Neurodivergent individuals need more than just a place to live:

We need spaces that support us, that embrace us without touching us.

Your home can be that place.
